A recent report has indicated that the majority of people play fair with the remote control – and allow all members of the household to have a much more equal share of using it.

The report, conducted by Logitech, has shown that 63% of people polled in Europe would describe their household's use of the simple remote control as a “democracy”. In contrast, only 23% have indicated it is like a “dictatorship”.

The Demand

Despite the indications that the remote control is shared evenly around the house, with the introduction of more and more home cinema systems in the home, perhaps this could all change. A system is designed to make the TV experience much more pleasurable, so making people want to sit in front of it for longer.

Home systems are supposedly to give you the ultimate cinematic experience, specifically recreating the sound, vision and acoustics of a cinema. With this in the home, more members of the household are likely to start demanding full use of the remote control. New, exciting pieces of equipment and gadgets usually have this effect over people!

If you currently have a small television in the home, the demand for the remote control is likely to be much less because there is less desire to sit in front of it for long periods of time. However, with a brand spanking new system in the house, everyone will be wanting to get a piece of the action.

In a few years time, it is quite feasible that the above figures will shift slightly, as the demand for home cinema systems in the home increases. It may just be that the remote control usage in the home does become more like a dictatorship; after all, the individual who has bought the new home cinema system is likely to the one holding onto the remote control!
